Plasma nitriding

The Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Härterei Technik GmbH hardening shop in Lüdenscheid offers plasma nitriding. This treatment is carried out in a modern, tandem pulse plasma facility.

Plasma diffusion treatment is a thermochemical heat treatment process, during which the chemical composition of a material is intentionally altered in the region of the surface layer by means of inward or outward diffusion of one or more elements, e.g. nitrogen.

The pulse plasma method can be used in virtually any branch of industry where abrasion, corrosion and wear have to be counteracted by a hard surface.

In addition, the service life of the workpieces is increased accordingly. The workpieces are exposed to a relatively low temperature during pulse plasma nitriding, this guaranteeing high dimensional stability.

The core hardness is not affected, making post-treatment unnecessary. The structure, thickness and hardness of the nitrided layer are controllable and can be individually adapted to the application in question.

Plasma nitriding is a modern, environmentally friendly process for hardening the surface of finish-machined tools.

Example:

Mould plate made of 1.2312, quenched and tempered, plasma-nitrided

Advantages:

  • No dimensional changes
  • Clean surface without residue
  • Substantially greater hardness at the surface
  • Improved corrosion resistance
  • Design of the diffusion and compound layer adapted to the tool application
